WINSTALL (Network Application Installer) offers an inexpensive and fully
extensible system to completely automate the installation of Windows
applications on any network, whether the applications will run locally or
from the file server. No limitations on the number of applications
you can install, and no extra modules to purchase. Add new applications
yourself as you acquire them. With WINSTALL, an end user can completely
install OR REMOVE a Windows application with a click of the mouse, making a
breeze out of the configuration of new nodes or the upgrading of applications
on all nodes.
The end user program, WINSTALL.EXE, reads the file WINAPPS.LST, which lists all
available applications. When a user selects an application for installation
or removal, WINSTALL.EXE reads a .DAT file for that application (filename.DAT),
which instructs WINSTALL.EXE what steps to take to install that application.
The LAN Administrator program, WINSTADM.EXE, provides a quick, simple, user-
friendly means of maintaining WINAPPS.LST and all application .DAT files.
You can create new .DAT files yourself for any Windows application --in
minutes!
Included with WINSTALL are ten sample application .DAT files for popular
Windows applications, plus one demonstration-only sample .DAT file,
SAMPLE.DAT. To get a quick look at the way WINSTALL.EXE looks to the user
and the way WINSTADM.EXE operates, place all the files in the same directory
and run the executables. (You will need to place the file VBRUN100.DLL in
your Windows System or Windows directory--it has not been included in the
.ZIP file because it would more than double the size of the file, and it is
widely available by itself, for example, as VBRUN1.ZIP in the Microsoft forum
on CompuServe, and with many other applications).
To get a quick look at WINSTALL.EXE in action, install "Sample Application."
This module will copy a couple of standard files around and create an icon
group. You can then use the REMOVE Button to delete the copies and icon group.
A message window (displaying the file SAMPLE.TXT) will explain what is being
done before WINSTALL.EXE takes any action.
NOTE: The included sample application .DAT files, while valid and workable,
are provided as examples only. If you choose to use them in a production
environment, be advised that Aleph Systems makes no guarantees of their
accuracy or applicability.
In any case, please use WINSTADM.EXE to examine the sample .DAT files carefully
and make any necessary changes before using them in your network. For example,
in the sample files, drive F: is used for all shared files located on the
server, and drive C: is used for all user- or node-specific files. You will
probably need to change this drive designation to the appropriate letter(s)
for your users, and you may also need to change the directories listed in the
sample files to match those on your file servers.
With WINSTADM.EXE, you will find these changes quick and easy to make. You
will also find that creating new application .DAT files is also a quick and
easy process.
Please read the file WINSTALL.WRI for complete instructions and explanations
of all files and file formats.
Please feel free to pass this program on to others for their evaluation, but
be sure to include all the files that are included with the program. The
complete list of files is in the file FILES.TXT.
Thanks for trying WINSTALL.
